What is Transpersonal Art Therapy?
Transpersonal practitioners seek to connect their clients with their Authentic soul-self. ‘Trans’ means ‘beyond’ and ‘persona’ means ‘the mask’ a literal translation is ‘Beyond the mask’.
Psychospiritual therapy has its roots in the work of Carl Jung. It is believed that Humans have the ability to heal oneself and access to this ‘self-healing’ is done though journeying in altered states of consciousness (ASC). By drawing on an individual’s inner wisdom and knowledge gathered from dreams, visions, subconscious and imagination, the transpersonal helps clients to realise that they are on a ‘life journey’ and that their soul is a unique expression or individual representation of their spirit.
A client can shift hidden and suppressed trauma remove it and bring back joy and purpose to their lives.
In Transpersonal therapy the therapist isn’t viewed as the expert, rather, the facilitator, who assists the client in their own truth and their own process. People who attend sessions are not called ‘patients’ they are clients.

The client is the expert of themselves, they have the lived experience of their own lives and so they also have the power of self-realisation self-healing. The therapist takes on the role of alchemist, holding dynamic sacred space for others.
Transpersonal Practitioners do not diagnose or label, we work with clients to see their life path and to help them understand it.
Do I have to be able to draw to attend a session?
Absolutely not we are not creating masterpieces we are exploring and experimenting.

Guided meditation – Is a particular type of meditation technique that takes a client on an imaginal journey. The client slows their breathing by counting in and out and relaxes into the mediation. As this world is opened up, the Practitioner can suggests specific things to begin with but moves on to be vague and open ended. It is in these moments our sub consciousness has its voice and reveals things that are not so obvious to us. Clients are asked to draw, journal or respond to their experience.
Mindfulness – Is a relaxing technique where the client is able become more grounded in the present moment. A great way to do this is to use art materials, not to create a masterpiece, but to enjoy the process of the paint moving across the paper. Eg. As watercolours blend together through water, the client can free their minds from stresses and be in the magic of the moment. It gives your brain a break.
Amplification questions - These are open-ended, expanding questions to explore a variety of aspects - artwork, words, embodied feelings. The practitoner and the client curiously explore together. A very powerful and enlightening process.
